Tanzania eyes nuclear power as officials join global energy talks in Austria

Vienna, Austria. Tanzania is positioning itself to tap nuclear power for electricity generation, with top government officials attending the 69th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy, Engineer Felchesmi Mramba, is leading the delegation at the high-level meeting, which brings together countries and institutions already investing in nuclear energy.

The participation comes as President Samia Suluhu Hassan has directed the Ministry of Energy to fast-track plans for Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) to begin using uranium reserves in Namtumbo, Ruvuma, to generate power.

Officials say the Vienna meeting provides Tanzania with a platform to learn from global experiences, exchange technical know-how, and explore investment prospects in nuclear energy projects.

The delegation also includes Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Carolyne Nombo, Tanzania’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to Austria, Amb. Naimi Aziz, and Zanzibar’s Energy, Water and Lands Permanent Secretary, Engineer Joseph John Kirangi.

They are joined by Commissioner for Electricity and Renewable Energy in the Ministry of Energy, Engineer Innocent Luoga, as well as senior experts from the Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission (TAEC).
