Mwanza has unveiled a new central market valued at USD 9.2 million (about TSh23 billion), a flagship project under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration aimed at boosting trade in the Lake Zone.
The Mwanza Central Market has the capacity to serve 5,000 people daily, equivalent to more than 1.8 million visitors annually. The facility comprises 1,400 stalls and parking space for up to 500 vehicles at a time.
Authorities say the market is not only a hub for commerce but also a symbol of economic transformation in the region.
It has already created 3,200 jobs, including 1,400 formal and 1,800 informal opportunities, strengthening livelihoods for traders and surrounding communities.
The market’s modern design and large-scale infrastructure are expected to streamline trade, ease congestion, and enhance business opportunities for entrepreneurs across the Lake Zone.
Officials describe the project as a clear demonstration of the Sixth Phase Government’s commitment to inclusive growth and economic empowerment.
