Tanga is turning ordinary sand into a high-value resource, supporting major construction and industrial projects while creating new opportunities for small-scale miners.
Muwa Trading Tanzania Limited has invested in a factory that washes and purifies sand to remove soil, roots, and other impurities.
The process has transformed sand from a low-value material into a vital raw material for strategic projects such as the Tanga Port expansion and the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) in Chongeleani Ward.
Tanga Regional Mining Officer, Engineer Laurent Bujashi, said the move has boosted the region’s industrial and construction sectors.
"Processed sand from this factory is now used in major projects, including Tanga Port upgrades, new factories, and the EACOP pipeline. It not only ensures quality raw materials but also opens new markets for sand miners and traders," he said.
Kaparata Maulid, Operations Officer at Muwa Trading, highlighted the wider economic impact:"This technology allows us to provide high-quality sand that meets the demands of large-scale projects. It adds value to our resources and supports government efforts to build an industrialized, competitive economy," he said.
Processed sand improves the quality of construction materials, supports factory development, creates jobs for local communities, and offers small-scale miners sustainable market opportunities.
With this initiative, Tanga is positioning itself as a hub for innovation in Tanzania’s mining sector, contributing to the country’s vision of a competitive industrial economy based on locally available resources.
