Tanesco moves gas plant to Mtwara to boost power supply

By Agnes Njaala, Dar es Salaam

The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) has moved a 20-megawatt (MW) natural gas power plant from Dar es Salaam to Mtwara in a bid to strengthen electricity supply in the southern regions.

The plant, known as TM 2500, was relocated from Ubungo III to Mtwara II station in Hiyari, where it will be connected to an existing 20MW facility, raising the station’s output to 40MW.

Engineer Godfrey Matiko of Mtwara II said the additional power will help stabilise supply in Mtwara and Lindi, where demand is rising with economic and social growth.

“The aim is to ensure reliable power for households and investors,” he said, urging residents to tap into the new investment opportunities created by improved supply.

With the new installation, Mtwara’s generation capacity rises to 70MW, further securing the region’s energy needs.
