ACT Wazalendo battles objections to Mpina’s candidacy

By Alfred Zacharia

ACT Wazalendo has accused the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and state institutions of orchestrating efforts to block its presidential candidate, Luhaga Joelson Mpina, from the 2025 election.

The party confirmed receiving three objections to Mpina’s candidacy on the night of September 12 from the Attorney General, the NRA presidential candidate, and the AAFP presidential candidate.

All three claim Mpina lacks the constitutional and party-based qualifications to run for president.

ACT Wazalendo dismissed the objections as politically motivated, linking them to a “climate of fear” within CCM after the High Court recently compelled the electoral commission to accept Mpina’s nomination papers.

In response, party lawyers are preparing counterarguments within the legal timeframe, while also filing a constitutional case challenging the Registrar of Political Parties’ decision to question Mpina’s endorsement.

The case has been registered under urgency as number 23438 of 2025.

The party also plans to file a counter-objection against CCM’s candidate, alleging her nomination bypassed CCM’s constitutional process.

“ACT Wazalendo and Mpina represent a genuine alternative that CCM fears,” the party says in the statement, vowing to press ahead despite the legal battles.

The escalating disputes highlight growing tensions in the run-up to the October polls.
