The Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) has undertaken preventive maintenance on the 220kV Chalinze–Kinyerezi transmission line without switching off power, thanks to the application of live line technology.
The operation involved replacing faulty insulators identified during an inspection. Previously, such work would have required shutting down the line, causing blackouts in areas supplied through Chalinze, Mlandizi, and Kibaha.
Engineer Philemon Tirukaizile from TANESCO’s transmission division said the technology ensures an uninterrupted supply while critical works are carried out.
“Without this technology, we would have had to shut down the line for at least six hours, leaving thousands of customers without electricity,” he explained.
Mr. Sadiki Sadiki, the Coast Region transmission supervisor, noted that the exercise is conducted by highly skilled technicians who undergo rigorous training and adhere to strict safety measures.
“The work is cleared with the substation team, after which the team leader assigns duties while ensuring maximum safety at every stage,” he said.
One of the technicians, Ms. Bahati Ramadhani, said she acquired her expertise through specialized training, beginning with work on the 400kV Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant transmission line.
“It is a source of pride to ensure our customers continue receiving electricity even as we conduct major maintenance,” she said.
TANESCO said the adoption of live line technology is part of broader efforts to reduce energy losses, improve efficiency, and address customer complaints associated with power cuts during routine maintenance.
