TADB finances egg factory to boost poultry sector in Kigoma

The Tanzania Agricultural Development Bank (TADB) has financed the construction of a TZS 3.4 billion egg production factory in Kigoma Region as part of efforts to strengthen agribusiness, create jobs, and stimulate cross-border trade in the western corridor.

The facility, Mayai Ltd, is located in Kimbwela village, Simbo ward, and is owned by businessman Mr. Rupinder Sandhu.

It stands as one of the largest egg production plants in Kigoma, Tabora, and Katavi, three regions that have historically faced limited access to large-scale poultry production and agribusiness investment.

According to TADB’s Business Development Officer, Mr. Patrick D. Kapungu, the factory is already generating benefits that go beyond production.

“So far, more than 40 people have been employed, while surrounding communities are benefitting from improved access to water, electricity, roads, schools, and health services supported through the project,” he said.

The poultry sector is increasingly becoming one of the most dynamic agribusiness segments in Tanzania. With the country’s growing population and rising urbanisation, the demand for poultry products has been on the rise. Kigoma, with its strategic location near borders with Burundi, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zambia, is particularly well placed to serve both domestic and regional markets.

Mr. Sandhu, the Managing Director of Mayai Ltd, explained that 80 percent of the investment was financed by TADB, underscoring the importance of agricultural financing in enabling private investment in rural areas.

“Without TADB’s support, this project would not have been possible,” he said.

The factory currently produces 3,000 trays of eggs daily, equivalent to nearly 90,000 trays per month. The production is expected to meet demand within Kigoma, Tabora, and Katavi, while gradually extending supply to other regions in the country.

In the long run, the company plans to export to neighbouring countries, tapping into regional markets that have growing demand for poultry products.

With continued support from TADB, agribusiness ventures like Mayai Ltd are expected to play a key role in transforming rural economies, increasing productivity, and positioning Tanzania as a competitive player in regional agricultural trade.
