Tanzania’s mining sector is increasingly shaping the future of agriculture and industrial growth by supplying key raw materials for fertilizer production.
Minerals such as dolomite, limestone, gypsum, and phosphate are not only driving industrial expansion but also strengthening the link between mining, agriculture, and construction.
Speaking in Tanga on September 10, 2025, Tanga Mining Limited Director, Mr. Rishit Lalseta, highlighted the importance of industrial minerals, particularly dolomite, in the fertilizer industry and their wider impact on food production.
“Dolomite is a vital component in fertilizer manufacturing. It enriches the soil with calcium and magnesium, balances acidity, and supports healthier crop growth, which in turn leads to higher yields. This means farmers gain more benefits while agriculture becomes more productive,” he said.
Mr. Lalseta noted that Tanzania’s fertilizer demand remains high, making the domestic market a priority, though the company is also considering export opportunities in the future.
“The local fertilizer market is huge. As we continue to serve farmers within the country, we are also planning to explore international markets. This would not only meet global demand but also bring in foreign exchange, benefiting the national economy,” he added.
According to him, fertilizers enhanced with dolomite-based nutrients have already helped farmers improve both the quantity and quality of their harvests, boosting food security and increasing incomes.
Since its establishment in 2014, Tanga Mining Limited has also created jobs in Tanga and neighboring regions while contributing revenue to the government through taxes and levies.
Tanga Regional Mining Officer, Engineer Laurent Bujashi, described the development as a strong example of how the mining sector can drive progress across multiple industries.
“When we see industrial minerals like dolomite being processed to add value in fertilizer production, we are not just addressing challenges in agriculture we are also strengthening food security. This shows how mining can directly benefit citizens through agriculture, industry, and construction,” he said.
Engineer Bujashi added that the government’s vision is for industrial minerals to play a central role in industrialization, job creation, and improving the livelihoods of Tanzanians.
