Government renovates MV Victoria to strengthen Lake Zone transport

The Government of Tanzania has completed a major renovation of MV Victoria, a passenger and cargo vessel operating on Lake Victoria, in a move aimed at boosting transport and trade across the Lake Zone regions.

The project, undertaken through the Marine Services Company Limited (MSCL) under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, cost more than Sh22 billion.

The renovated vessel now has the capacity to carry up to 600 passengers and 200 tonnes of cargo.

Officials said the investment has already generated more than 150 direct jobs and about 400 indirect employment opportunities during and after the renovation process.

The government believes the project will provide reliable and affordable marine transport, which is key for social and economic development in the region.

The MV Victoria is expected to strengthen connectivity between Mwanza, Bukoba, Kemondo and Nansio.

With its improved capacity and safety standards, the vessel will help reduce transport challenges, facilitate the movement of goods and people, and promote business opportunities along Lake Victoria.

The government has been investing heavily in marine transport as part of wider efforts to modernize infrastructure and unlock economic potential in lake regions.

Authorities are optimistic that the MV Victoria will serve as a catalyst for regional trade, improve access to markets, and enhance livelihoods for communities relying on Lake Victoria.
