Education key to ending harmful traditions in Tanzania

By The Respondent Reporter

Education is proving to be a powerful tool in helping communities abandon harmful cultural practices, particularly those that threaten the well-being of women and children.

Recent initiatives under the National Program to Eliminate Violence Against Women and Children (MTAKKUWA) are showing promising results across the country.

Speaking during a stakeholder meeting in Dodoma yesterday, 17th September 2025, Neema Ndoboka, Acting Director of the Department of Community Development at the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Women, and Special Groups, emphasized that changing deeply rooted traditions takes time and persistence.

“Communities have inherited some practices over generations, and changing them is not easy. But through education and continuous engagement, people are beginning to reject customs that harm certain groups. Gradual change is visible, and efforts must continue,” Ndoboka said.

She urged communities to retain positive traditions that reflect African heritage, uphold morals, and strengthen social values.

“Our focus is on eliminating practices that oppress or hurt individuals, while preserving those that build strong and ethical communities,” she added.

Carlos Gwamagobe, Assistant Director of the Department of Community Development, highlighted the government’s support for development partners working to educate communities about beneficial and harmful traditions.

MTAKKUWA Coordinator Alex Shayo noted that awareness campaigns are already contributing to a decline in violence against women and children.

“Education is creating real change. Communities are adopting new ways of thinking, reducing harmful practices and fostering social responsibility,” he said.

Development stakeholders implementing the initiatives praised the government for its collaboration and pledged to continue raising awareness, promoting positive traditions, and ensuring lasting social transformation.
