The Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC) has unveiled plans to revive badminton in the country, aiming to restore the sport’s past glory and develop a new generation of players.
TOC Vice President Henry Tandau said discussions have already been held with the Badminton World Federation (BWF), which has pledged its support for the initiative.
“We have prepared a constitution that will operate under TOC, and once it is finalised, it will be managed by the relevant bodies,” Tandau said.
“Tanzania once stood tall in African badminton, winning gold and silver medals twice at continental championships. This shows the sport’s potential, and we are committed to bringing it back.”he added
According to Tandau, the revival plan will focus on identifying and nurturing talented players to compete in both national and international tournaments.
He, however, noted that the shortage of sports facilities has hindered the growth of various disciplines, including badminton.
“For instance, Anatoglo was once a key boxing venue, but it has been converted for office use. Such losses have slowed the progress of many sports because athletes no longer have enough training grounds,” he explained.
