TOC elections loom as IOC sets September deadline

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has directed the Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC) to hold its General Elections by the end of September this year.

Confirming receipt of an official letter from the IOC, TOC President Gulam Rashid told reporters in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, that the committee is already engaging relevant authorities to ensure compliance with the directive.

“We have received a letter from the IOC instructing us to conduct the General Elections by September this year, as our mandate has already expired,” Rashid said.

He added that the TOC is preparing to initiate the election process immediately after attending the National Olympic Committees (NOC) meeting scheduled to take place in Maputo next month.

TOC Vice President Henry Tandau noted that the committee is considering writing to the IOC to request a slight extension.

The proposed adjustment would allow the NOC meeting in Maputo to conclude before the election process begins.

“We plan to write to the IOC to request a one-week extension so that the NOC meeting in Maputo can be completed first. The elections will then be conducted in line with the constitution approved by the IOC,” said Tandau.

He further explained that once the official procedures are finalized, the process of issuing and returning nomination forms will restart, paving the way for the long-awaited elections.
