Tanzania Breweries Plc (TBL) has partnered with PETPRO to roll out the country’s first scalable post-consumer glass recovery and recycling model, marking a milestone in the drive toward sustainable waste management.
The two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at TBL’s headquarters in Ilala, Dar es Salaam, in a move aimed at tackling the mounting challenge of glass waste, reducing landfill pressure, and creating economic opportunities within the recycling value chain.
The initiative will establish a nationwide collection, processing, and reuse system, converting waste glass into raw materials for manufacturers.
It aligns with TBL’s 2025 Sustainability Roadmap and Tanzania’s broader environmental goals, reinforcing the shift toward a circular economy.
“This partnership with PETPRO is a blueprint for how manufacturers can elevate their role in driving both environmental and economic impact,” said TBL Managing Director Michelle Kilpin.
“We hope it becomes a platform to enhance producer responsibility and foster greater collaboration within the industry.”he added
PETPRO Managing Director Nicholaus Jackson noted that the venture would set “a new standard for glass recycling in Tanzania,” adding that it would combine TBL’s distribution reach with PETPRO’s recycling logistics expertise to operate at scale.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the programme is expected to create steady demand for recovered glass, generating income for thousands of waste collectors and recyclers, particularly in underserved communities.
The model also positions TBL and PETPRO as industry pioneers and could serve as a blueprint for other sectors seeking to balance sustainability with commercial growth.
TBL, part of the AB InBev Group, operates breweries in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mwanza, and Mbeya, along with a distillery and multiple depots.
Its portfolio includes leading brands such as Safari Lager, Kilimanjaro Premium Lager, Castle Lite, and Budweiser.
