Tanzanians have been urged to work closely with the government to achieve the National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy target, which aims for more than 80 percent of citizens to use clean cooking energy by 2034.

The call was made today by Florian Haule, Representative of the Chairman of the Rural Energy Board (REB), during the distribution of 15-kilogram gas cylinders and two-burner stoves to Mbeya Regional Prisons staff.

The initiative is being implemented by the government through the Rural Energy Agency (REA).

Haule, joined by REB Board Member Stephen Mwakifwamba, encouraged officers and staff to serve as ambassadors, promoting clean cooking energy within their communities.

“We commend President Samia Suluhu Hassan for introducing the clean cooking energy agenda, which aims to improve citizens’ livelihoods while protecting the environment. The government alone cannot achieve this goal. We urge everyone to encourage relatives, friends, and communities to adopt clean cooking energy so that by 2034, 80 percent of Tanzanians will be using it,” Haule said.

REA Deputy Director General Emmanuel Yesaya said the agency has partnered with the Tanzania Prisons Service to install clean cooking energy systems in all prisons nationwide.

The project, costing over TZS 35 billion, includes REA’s contribution of more than TZS 26.5 billion for the installation of these systems and the distribution of gas cylinders and stoves to all prison staff.

REA Project Engineer Francis Manyama reported that in Mbeya Region alone, 895 gas cylinders and stoves are earmarked for distribution to prison staff.

Mbeya Regional Prisons Senior Assistant Commissioner Raymond Mwampashi thanked the government for the initiative and pledged that staff would act as ambassadors, encouraging others to embrace clean cooking energy.
