The Gaming Board of Tanzania (GBT) has announced a substantial increase in revenue collections, amassing over TZS 260.21 billion within four years under the Sixth Phase Government led by President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan nearly double the previous collections of TZS 131.99 billion.

Speaking at a press briefing convened by the Treasury Registrar’s Office in Dar es Salaam, GBT Acting Director General, Mr. Olesumayan Daniel, revealed that the sector has contributed a total of TZS 922.25 billion in taxes and generated more than 30,000 direct and indirect jobs, reinforcing its growing role in Tanzania’s economy.

In the 2024/2025 financial year, GBT issued the National Lottery license to Ithuba Tanzania Limited, a company with 40 percent Tanzanian ownership and 60 percent South African investment.

Ithuba has invested over USD 20 million (about TZS 50 billion) and officially commenced operations in April 2025.

Mr. Daniel underscored the importance of responsible participation in betting, reminding the public that it is a form of entertainment not a source of income and urged players to exercise discipline to avoid financial harm.

Moreover, five percent of GBT’s revenues are allocated toward the development of sports across the country. To date, between TZS 44 billion and 53 billion have been disbursed to the National Sports Council (BMT) to support sports initiatives.

The board has licensed 62 companies offering a total of 8,549 betting games. However, challenges persist due to unlicensed operators, prompting ongoing efforts to clamp down on illegal activities and protect vulnerable groups, including ensuring minors do not participate in betting.

In the last two years, new investments amounting to TZS 66.7 billion have flowed into the sector, with expectations for continued growth.

GBT’s progress reflects the government’s commitment to regulating and leveraging the betting industry to support economic development and sports advancement under President Samia’s administration.
