SADC countries urged to uphold peace amid challenges

Despite political tensions, cross-border crimes, and economic difficulties, Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries have made significant strides in promoting peace, stability, and good governance, a senior Tanzanian diplomat has said.

Ambassador Samwel Shelukindo, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, made the remarks while opening the Tripartite Meeting of Secretaries-General of Political, Defense, and Security Organizations in Antananarivo, Madagascar, on August 15, 2025.

“While member states and the world continue to face challenges, our region has remained resilient, committed to achieving political and economic objectives for the benefit of our people,” Ambassador Shelukindo said.

He emphasized that peace and stability are key foundations for sustainable development, urging SADC countries to strengthen capacities in conflict prevention, mediation, and peacebuilding.

Ambassador Shelukindo also extended his best wishes to member states preparing for general elections, including Malawi, Seychelles, and Tanzania.

He noted that Tanzania is ready to host the SADC election observer team, as preparations for the October 2025 general elections continue.
