President Samia Suluhu Hassan has approved the elevation of Bagamoyo District Council to Bagamoyo Town Council, the Minister of State in the President’s Office (Regional Administration and Local Government), Mohamed Mchengerwa, announced on Friday, August 22, 2025.

Minister Mchengerwa, speaking during an official visit to Bagamoyo in the Coastal Region, said his ministry will complete all legal procedures, including publication in government gazettes, to formalize the new status as soon as possible.

During the visit, the minister inspected several government projects in health, education, and infrastructure.

He toured a new dormitory for students with special needs at Nianjema Primary School, stressing the importance of maintaining the facility to serve more children.

“The project aims to bring together children with special needs and equip them with life skills,” said Minister Mchengerwa.

He praised President Samia for the significant improvements she is implementing nationwide in education, health, and infrastructure.

The school’s headteacher, Renatus Kisenha, said Nianjema Primary School has 1,688 students, including 65 children with special needs.

He thanked the government for building a dormitory that can accommodate 80 students.

The dormitory project, which started on February 1, 2024, and was completed on July 15, 2024, cost over TZS 141 million and was executed through a force account using the electronic procurement system NEST.

Minister Mchengerwa also inspected major renovations at Bagamoyo District Hospital and commended the staff for their dedication.

Dr. Kandi Lussingu, Head of Health, Social Welfare, and Nutrition at the council, said the government allocated TZS 900 million for the hospital upgrades.

The elevation of Bagamoyo to town status is expected to strengthen local governance and boost development in the area, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and public services.
