Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has urged the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) to strengthen and sustain youth development programs to raise the standards of Tanzanian football.
His remarks came after Tanzania’s Taifa Stars were knocked out of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) following a 1-0 defeat to Morocco in the quarter-final at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Thursday.
Addressing the players after the match, Mr Majaliwa said the exit should not mark the end for the squad, as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA provide numerous platforms for competition.
“TFF must design and sustain modern programs for players, especially those in the national team,” he said.
“They should also be exposed to more competitive matches to gain experience and confidence. Playing against different teams will prepare them for major international tournaments.”he added
He praised the players for their commitment, urging them to maintain fitness and competitiveness ahead of the resumption of the Premier League.
“We appreciate your contribution in raising the standard of our football. With more games and structured training, your performance will continue to improve,” said Mr Majaliwa.
Taifa Stars coach Hemed Morocco lauded his players for their efforts, despite the loss, noting that missed scoring opportunities proved costly.
“Football is a game of mistakes. Unfortunately, we didn’t take our chances, and our opponents did,” he said.
Defender Dickson Job thanked Tanzanians for their support throughout the tournament and called for continued backing.
“Please don’t stop supporting us. This is just the beginning, and we believe we can go further in future tournaments,” he said.
