Unknown assailants attacked the former Chairman of the Same District Council, Mr. Yusto Mapande, with machetes on the night of August 21, 2025, at around 9:00 PM as he was entering his home.
During the incident, Mapande sustained injuries to his arm and leg while attempting to defend himself.
The Same District Commissioner, Kasilda Mgeni, confirmed the incident and strongly condemned the brutal act, stating that police investigations are already underway to identify and apprehend the culprits.
“I am deeply saddened by this incident. The police are conducting a thorough investigation to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. The government is taking this matter seriously and will not hesitate to act against anyone found to be involved,” said Kasilda.
She further urged residents of Same District to remain vigilant in their daily routines, avoid excessive alcohol consumption, and ensure they return home early unless absolutely necessary to stay out late.
Speaking on the evening following the attack, Mr. Yusto Mapande recounted the ordeal after a visit by the District Commissioner to check on his condition.
He explained that the attackers had trailed him on a motorcycle as he neared his home, and he initially mistook them for visitors with good intentions.
He said that while waiting for his gate to be opened, the men suddenly attacked him with machetes and fled with approximately 20 million Tanzanian shillings he had in his possession from business dealings.
Mapande added that after the assault, he began to bleed profusely and experienced severe trembling, but thanks to the swift action of doctors at Same Town Hospital, his life was saved and he is currently recovering well.
He also revealed chilling details: “As I pretended to have lost consciousness, I overheard them talking. One of them thought they had slit my throat because I had placed my injured arm near my neck.
They said, ‘He’s done for,’ which clearly indicated that someone had sent them with the intention to kill me,” said Mr. Mapande
