Kenya’s CHAN dream ends as Madagascar triumphs on penalties

Kenya’s impressive debut at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) came to a painful end on Friday after a dramatic penalty shoot-out saw Madagascar claim a 4-3 victory to reach the semi-finals.

The Harambee Stars, cheered on by thousands at Kasarani Stadium, were chasing their first continental semi-final appearance in 38 years.

After a 1-1 stalemate in 120 minutes, Madagascar held their nerve from the spot, with Toky Rakotondraibe scoring the decisive penalty after Alphonce Omija missed for Kenya.

Kenya began the second half on a high, taking the lead just three minutes after the restart when Omija rose above the Malagasy defense to head home Boniface Muchiri’s cross. The goal sparked wild celebrations and put Benni McCarthy’s side in control.

Moments later, Ryan Ogam appeared to have doubled the lead, but VAR intervened to rule out the strike for a foul in the build-up.

The decision shifted momentum, and Madagascar seized their chance when Lewis Bandi handled inside the box in the 66th minute. Fenohasina Razafimaro converted the penalty to level the score.

Omija, who had given Kenya hope, later missed in the shoot-out, symbolizing the heartbreak of tournament football.

Siraj Mohammed, Daniel Sakari, and Sylvester Owino converted their spot-kicks for Kenya, but Mike Kibwage’s effort was saved by Malagasy goalkeeper Michel Ramandimbisoa before Omija dragged his wide. Rakotondraibe then sealed victory for Madagascar, sending them into jubilant celebrations.

Kenya’s CHAN journey will be remembered for resilience and promise. They topped a tough group featuring Morocco and DR Congo without defeat, conceding only two goals in five matches.

Coach McCarthy praised his squad for restoring pride to Kenyan football, though a lack of cutting edge in attack proved costly at this stage.

Madagascar, bronze medalists in 2022, continue their rise as African football’s surprise package. Head coach Romuald Felix Rakotondrabe has instilled remarkable composure in his side, with Ramandimbisoa again starring with two penalty saves.

Madagascar advances to the semi-finals with growing confidence, while Kenya departs with optimism for the future.

The Harambee Stars may have fallen short, but their spirited performance in their first CHAN appearance signals the start of a promising chapter in Kenyan football.
