Four promising Tanzanian swimmers, aged between 14 and 18, have departed for Romania to represent the country at the World Youth Championships, taking place from August 16 to 25, 2025.
The team left on the night of August 14 and will spend two days in training to acclimatize before the start of the global competition.
During a brief ceremony to hand over the national flag, National Sports Council (BMT) Sports Officer Charles Maguzu urged the young athletes to work as a team, compete with determination, and aim to return with medals that will bring pride to Tanzania.
“The Government believes in you and your ability to carry the national flag high as you compete against some of the best swimmers in the world,” Maguzu said.
“Under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, your contribution has been recognized, and this trip along with your allowances has been made possible. We trust you will not disappoint because you have both the drive and the ability to make your country proud.”he added
He encouraged the swimmers to listen to their coaches, follow instructions closely, and give their best effort in every event they compete in.
Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA) Chairman David Mwasyoge expressed confidence that the team would perform well and improve their timings in Romania.
“These young swimmers represent the future of Tanzanian sports. We are grateful to the Government, sponsors, and especially the parents for their commitment and support in preparing the team,” Mwasyoge said.
TSA Technical Director Amina Mfaume noted that the swimmers had undergone rigorous technical training and were ready to compete at the highest level.
One of the competitors, Philbertha Demelo, expressed optimism, saying the team was well-prepared and determined to return with positive results.
