Airtel Africa Foundation has unveiled a new digital training initiative dubbed Tech For Her, aimed at empowering young women in Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia with high-demand technology skills and career opportunities.

The five-week intensive online program, launched in partnership with education platform Tertiary DNS, is designed to equip participants with in-demand skills such as Linux Administration, Cybersecurity, and Data Analytics.

It seeks to bridge the gender gap in Africa’s growing digital economy by fostering inclusion and offering pathways to careers in tech.

“Africa’s digital revolution cannot reach its full potential without gender equity,” said Dr. Segun Ogunsanya, Chair of the Airtel Africa Foundation. “By investing in Africa’s women, we are investing in sustainable economic transformation.”

Participants will undergo over 100 hours of training through a flexible model that accommodates both working professionals and unemployed applicants.

In addition to classroom learning, graduates will receive 12 months of skill development support.

Top performers  those scoring above 90% will qualify for internships with Airtel Africa and structured mentorships from tech industry leaders.

Eligibility for the program requires basic digital literacy and at least a national diploma in Science or Technology-related fields.

To ensure inclusivity, 30% of participant slots will be reserved for women in rural and underserved communities, while 40% of the seats will prioritize applicants from low-income households.

The initiative comes against the backdrop of a tech sector that remains largely male-dominated. According to UNESCO, women constitute only 30% of tech professionals in sub-Saharan Africa and hold as little as 2–8% of software development roles.

“At Airtel Africa, we’re committed to a future where young women can lead in innovation,” said Annika Poutiainen, a member of the Foundation’s board.

“Tech For Her creates a pipeline of female tech leaders ready to unlock digital opportunities across the continent and beyond.”he added
