Zanzibar President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has reaffirmed the Isles’ position as a key gateway for fostering collaboration between Africa and the rest of the world in higher education, innovation, and research.

Speaking during the official opening of the QS Africa Forum 2025 held on July 3 at the Golden Tulip Hotel near Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, Dr. Mwinyi said Zanzibar will continue playing a central role in promoting academic excellence and technological advancement across the continent.

“Zanzibar is committed to becoming a strategic bridge that connects Africa to the global knowledge economy through innovation, cutting-edge research, and sustainable development in higher education,” he said.

He emphasised the importance of strengthening partnerships between African universities and global institutions of higher learning to drive impactful research, encourage innovation, and accelerate the adoption of emerging technologies within academic ecosystems.

Turning to artificial intelligence (AI), Dr. Mwinyi noted that while AI is rapidly shaping the future of education and development, it is crucial that Zanzibar not only embraces the technology but also derives tangible benefits from it.

He called for collaboration with international academic and research institutions to help manage potential risks associated with AI deployment.

“Zanzibar must not lag behind in the use of artificial intelligence. However, as we embrace its benefits, we must also work closely with global education institutions to ensure responsible use and proper mitigation of its risks,” he said.

Dr. Mwinyi reaffirmed his government’s commitment to prioritising the education sector particularly higher education as a key driver of socio-economic transformation.

He noted that strengthening the sector is essential for creating opportunities, fostering economic growth, and enhancing regional and international cooperation.

“The Government of Zanzibar continues to place education, especially higher education, at the core of its development agenda. Our goal is to empower institutions, expand academic opportunities, and promote long-term socio-economic progress,” he said.

The President described the hosting of the QS Africa Forum 2025 in Zanzibar as a timely and strategic move that reflects growing recognition of Africa’s potential in global academic discourse.

He said the forum provides a vital platform for African countries to speak with one voice on the future of higher education, technology, and innovation.

“This gathering is a milestone for Africa’s academic sector. It presents an opportunity to align our vision and coordinate efforts for sustainable development through education and innovation,” Dr. Mwinyi said.

The QS Africa Forum is part of the global QS Quacquarelli Symonds series and brings together policymakers, university leaders, researchers, and technology experts to explore the future of higher education in Africa and beyond.
