Yanga launches ‘Championship Brick’ campaign to fund African glory push

Tanzanian football giants Young Africans SC (Yanga) have launched a bold fundraising initiative dubbed "Tofali la Ubingwa 2025/2026" – The Championship Brick – as part of wider efforts to strengthen their squad and challenge for continental success in the upcoming season.

Unveiled at the club’s headquarters on July 11, the campaign aims to raise at least TZS 24 billion (approx. £7.5 million) within two months, by mobilising one million members to each contribute TZS 24,000 (£7.50).

Speaking at the launch, Ally Kamwe, Yanga’s Media and Communications Manager, said the funds will allow the club to compete in the transfer market against Africa’s top clubs and build a squad capable of delivering success both domestically and in CAF competitions.

“To have a winning team, you must be economically powerful in the market. That’s the only way to secure the top players who can help realise your ambitions,” Kamwe told reporters.

Kamwe confirmed that the club’s newly appointed head coach has already arrived in the country and is currently reviewing performance reports from the past three technical benches. He added that the coach’s official unveiling will follow after decisions are made on which players will be retained, released, or signed.

“This transitional period is crucial. Once we understand the squad needs, we’ll make everything public, including the coach’s identity,” he said.

The club is expected to offer new contracts to key players whose deals have expired but remain highly sought-after in the transfer market.

Yanga’s leadership believes that financial independence is essential to consistent success, and Kamwe challenged fans to take ownership of the club’s future.

“There are over 40 million Tanzanians, and Yanga fans are everywhere. We are starting with just one million contributors. If we hit that target, we will have a team ready to compete from day one,” he stated.

He also declared that the 2024/2025 season had officially been closed, symbolically describing the new campaign as “building a new house of champions” – a structure that will be underpinned by financial strength and unity.

“For us to grow as a club and compete on the African stage, we need muscle — and that comes from our fans. By paying membership fees and supporting this campaign, every fan becomes a stakeholder in Yanga’s success,” he added.

Yanga’s initiative mirrors a growing trend among African clubs aiming to boost self-reliance, enhance professionalism, and maintain competitiveness amid rising operational costs and increasing standards in continental football.

The Championship Brick campaign is not just a financial plan — it is a declaration of intent from one of East Africa’s most storied clubs: to build from the ground up and rise among Africa’s elite.
