The 2025 Uhuru Torch race leader, Ismail Ussi, has commended the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) in Manyara Region for its effective implementation of road infrastructure projects, citing their swift intervention following a natural disaster that paralyzed transport in Hanang' District.
Speaking in Katesh town during an inspection of an ongoing bridge construction along the Babati–Gehandu road, Ussi praised TANROADS for restoring a critical transport link that was swept away by a mudslide from Mount Hanang’ in December 2023.
“The strong oversight by TANROADS has ensured this vital infrastructure is being rebuilt to standard. In the end, the real beneficiaries are the communities who rely on this road daily,” Ussi said.
The bridge, which replaces one destroyed during the disaster, is currently 75 percent complete and is scheduled for completion by November 18, 2025.
According to Manyara Regional TANROADS Manager, Eng. Dutu Masele, the government has allocated TZS 1.87 billion for the project, which is being executed by ROCKTRONIC LTD under TANROADS supervision.
“This project is of strategic importance. Once completed, it will ease movement for both passengers and cargo, while improving pedestrian safety. It will also enhance connectivity between Hanang’ and neighbouring regions,” Eng. Masele said.
He added that the bridge will play a vital role in stimulating economic growth, particularly for communities around Katesh and along the Babati–Gehandu corridor.
“We are grateful to the Sixth Phase Government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan for prioritising this investment. It’s a reflection of the government’s commitment to infrastructure development and disaster recovery,” he noted.
Residents have welcomed the project, expressing optimism that it will ease transport and boost local trade. Sharifa Abdala, a resident of Katesh, said the bridge will offer long-term relief to road users.
“I’m happy the Uhuru Torch has visited this site. This project will benefit many, especially traders and travelers who use this road to access markets and services,” she said.
The project forms part of broader government efforts to restore damaged infrastructure and strengthen regional transport networks.
