Tanzania’s national women’s football team, Twiga Stars, has been eliminated from the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco following a 4-2 defeat to Ghana in their final Group C match.

Heading into the decisive fixture, Twiga Stars needed a win to secure a spot in the quarterfinals. However, Ghana proved too strong, sealing all three points and advancing to the knockout stage alongside defending champions South Africa.

South Africa finished at the top of Group C after thrashing Mali 4-0, ensuring their place in the last eight.

As a result, the quarterfinal fixtures will see South Africa face Group A’s third-place finishers Senegal, while Ghana will take on Algeria.

Despite their heavy loss, Mali still progressed and will face host nation Morocco in the next round.

Speaking shortly after the match, Twiga Stars head coach Bakari Shime admitted it was a difficult outing for his side, who struggled to find their rhythm.

“It was a tough game. We suffered early setbacks including an injury and conceding an early goal, which disrupted our structure,” said Shime.

He added that the team has taken away important lessons from the competition despite the early exit.

“This tournament has been a learning curve for us. We didn’t perform to our expectations, but we’ve gained valuable experience. Our focus now shifts to preparing for our upcoming match against Ethiopia, where we aim to perform better and rebuild our chances of returning to this stage in the future,” he said.

WAFCON 2024 continues in Morocco with high-stakes knockout rounds, as top contenders gear up for the battle to be crowned Africa’s best. Meanwhile, Twiga Stars will return home with lessons to reflect on and a mission to come back stronger.
