Tanzanian international basketball referee and Director of Referees at the Dar es Salaam Basketball Association (BD), Shaban Mahobonya, has been honoured with an international assignment to officiate the playoff games of the Vital’o Basketball League Burundi’s premier basketball championship, officially known as the Burundi National Basketball League.
The 2025 playoffs, which tipped off on July 5 and are scheduled to conclude on July 20, bring together the country’s top basketball teams in a highly competitive best-of-seven series format.
Mahobonya’s selection as one of the referees for this decisive stage underscores his growing reputation and the trust placed in his officiating credentials at the continental level.
According to Tanzania Basketball Federation (TBF) spokesperson Mary Arthur, Game 3 has already been played, featuring a high-intensity clash between Urunani and Dynamo.
The match drew large crowds and was praised for its competitiveness and high-quality play a testament to the league’s growth and Mahobonya’s role in maintaining high standards of officiating.
“His participation at this critical stage of the playoffs reflects not only his international recognition but also Tanzania’s progress in producing top-tier officiating talent,” said Arthur.
