President Samia to lead nation in 2025 Heroes Day commemoration

President Samia Suluhu Hassan is expected to lead Tanzanians in commemorating Heroes Day on July 25, 2025, at the Mashujaa Grounds in Mtumba, Dodoma an event set to honour the country’s fallen heroes and celebrate the spirit of patriotism.

Speaking ahead of the national ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Dr Doto Biteko, underscored the significance of the occasion, describing it as a moment for reflection on the courage, sacrifice, and service of those who laid down their lives or dedicated themselves to the nation.

“Heroes Day reminds us of the brave men and women who fought to protect our sovereignty, maintain peace, and build our nation,” said Dr Biteko. 

“We remember those who paid the ultimate price on the battlefield, those who served faithfully and retired with dignity, and those who suffered injuries while defending Tanzania’s freedom and honour.”he added

The commemorations will officially begin at midnight on July 24, when the Heroes Memorial Flame will be lit by Dodoma Regional Commissioner Rosemary Senyamule on behalf of the President. The lighting of the flame will mark the start of a national moment of remembrance.

On July 25, the main event will begin at 9:00 a.m. with a ceremonial military parade by the country’s defence and security forces.

 The national flag will be flown at half-mast as a symbol of respect. The Memorial Flame will be extinguished at midnight to formally conclude the 2025 commemorations.

Dr Biteko urged Tanzanians across the country to participate fully in the observance of the day, describing it as a unifying moment for all citizens.

“This is not just a national event it’s a call to unity, patriotism, and national pride,” he said. “Let us honour our heroes not only in ceremony, but by living their values sacrifice, courage, and love for the nation.”he added

He called upon media outlets and digital platforms to play their role in amplifying the message and educating younger generations about the meaning and significance of the day.

“We must teach our children what heroism truly means the value of selflessness and the importance of nationhood. It is through this spirit that we safeguard the legacy of those who came before us and secure the future of our country,” Dr Biteko added.

The annual commemoration, observed nationwide, honours soldiers, public servants, and civilians who have made extraordinary contributions to Tanzania’s freedom and development.
