The world of football is in mourning following the tragic death of Portuguese international Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who passed away on Thursday morning in Spain.
In a solemn statement released by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), the governing body expressed deep sorrow and paid heartfelt tribute to both men, acknowledging their immense contributions to Portuguese football and their irreplaceable presence within the community.
“Much more than an exceptional player, with nearly 50 caps for the senior national team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all his teammates and opponents,” the Federation said. “His joy was contagious, and he was a true role model, both on and off the pitch.”
The Federation also extended its sincere condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and clubs associated with the two players Liverpool FC, where Jota had built a successful international career, and FC Penafiel, where André Silva played domestically.
In honour of the two players, the FPF has formally requested UEFA to observe a minute of silence ahead of the women’s European Championship fixture between Portugal and Spain on Thursday evening.
“The passing of Diogo and André Silva is an irreparable loss to Portuguese football,” the FPF statement read.
“We have lost two champions, and we will do everything in our power every day to honour their legacy.”he added
Diogo Jota, 27, had become a mainstay of Portugal’s senior team since his debut in 2019, bringing flair, determination, and humility to every match.
His brother André Silva, while less internationally renowned, was a rising talent known for his dedication to the sport and strong performances in domestic football.
The sudden deaths of the two siblings have sent shockwaves through the football world, with fans, players, and institutions across Europe sharing tributes and expressing solidarity with the grieving family.
Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel are also expected to pay tribute in upcoming matches, as the football community continues to come to terms with the loss of two promising lives.
The exact circumstances surrounding their deaths remain under investigation by Spanish authorities.
As Portugal and the global football fraternity reflect on the lives of Diogo and André, their legacy will be remembered not just for what they achieved on the field but for the spirit, sportsmanship, and humanity they brought to the game.
