Fountain Gate face decisive 180 minutes to secure NBC Tanzania Premier League survival

By Flora Mkoloma

Fountain Gate are staring down 180 crucial minutes that will determine whether they retain their place in the NBC Tanzania Premier League or face relegation to the Championship next season.

The team is set to face Stand United tomorrow in the first leg of a tense promotion/relegation play-off. The outcome of this two-legged tie will decide which team earns a spot in the top flight for the 2025/26 season.

This comes after Fountain Gate suffered a 4-2 aggregate defeat to Tanzania Prisons in their initial play-off encounter, a result that confirmed Prisons’ place in the Premier League and sent Fountain Gate into a second-chance battle for survival.

Speaking ahead of the clash, Fountain Gate’s Communications Officer, Issa Liponda, expressed confidence in the team’s preparations and readiness to fight for their top-tier status.

"We have prepared thoroughly and are determined to get a good result away from home. That will give us the momentum to finish strongly when we return for the second leg," said Liponda.

He stressed the importance of the first 90 minutes, saying they will be key in shaping the team’s path forward.

“These opening minutes are critical. If we play our game and execute our strategy well, we can build a solid advantage before returning home,” he added.

Liponda reaffirmed the club’s commitment to staying in the Premier League, insisting that the players understand the magnitude of the moment.

“Our objective is clear  to remain in the Premier League. Every player knows what is at stake, and we are ready to fight until the final whistle,” he said.

Acknowledging the competitive nature of the play-off, Liponda noted that both teams are equally motivated to secure promotion.

“It will be a tough battle. Both sides are hungry for Premier League football, but we believe in our abilities and the strength of our team.”he added

He also issued a passionate call to the club’s supporters, urging fans, stakeholders, and well-wishers to continue offering their support during this critical time.

“We need our fans now more than ever. Their encouragement and belief in the team can make a big difference. Let’s unite behind the players and push together for victory,” he concluded.

With only two matches standing between Fountain Gate and Premier League survival, the pressure is on — and the next 180 minutes will define the club’s future.
