The Tanzania Police Force has confirmed the arrest of two individuals linked to the brutal killing of a young man, Enock Thomas Mhangwa, whose beating was captured in a viral video widely circulated on social media.

The incident occurred on June 26, 2025, and shows the deceased tied up and repeatedly beaten with sticks. Authorities say the assault led to his death, prompting immediate police investigations.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Geita Regional Police Command named the two suspects in custody as Ferdinand Antony, also known as Masembo, who serves as the Village Executive Officer of Liyobahika, and Hussein Ally, alias Madebe. Both are believed to have played a key role in the assault that claimed the young man’s life.

Police also confirmed that the search is ongoing for additional suspects, including the Village Executive Officer of Uyovu and two local militia members (Mgambo), who have since gone into hiding.

“The Police Force is committed to bringing all individuals involved in this tragic incident to justice,” said the statement. “No one is above the law, and taking the law into one’s own hands is a criminal offence.”

Authorities have condemned the incident as an unlawful act of mob justice and warned the public against similar behavior.

The police urged members of the public to report crimes through legal channels and to resist the urge to retaliate or use force against suspected offenders.

“This tragic loss of life is a painful reminder of why justice must be pursued through the right procedures,” the statement read.

The police have also appealed to citizens for information that may assist in the arrest of the remaining suspects, promising full legal action against all those involved.

The case has sparked widespread public concern and renewed debate on the dangers of mob justice, especially in rural communities.

Human rights activists have also called for strengthened oversight of local government leaders and community policing practices.

As the investigation continues, the Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace, enforcing the law, and protecting the rights and safety of every Tanzanian.
