Communities in Geita Region are beginning to see the transformative impact of the government’s ongoing efforts to improve access to quality education through the Secondary Education Quality Improvement Project (SEQUIP).
As part of the initiative, two major education infrastructure projects are underway one completed and operational, the other under construction aimed at expanding opportunities for both academic and vocational learning.
The flagship among the developments is Geita Girls’ Secondary School, a modern learning institution established in Geita Municipality.
With a government investment of TSh 4.1 billion, the school is now fully functional and offering education services to girls from within and beyond the region.
The funding has facilitated the construction of a wide range of infrastructure at the school, including state-of-the-art science laboratories, fully equipped classrooms, administration offices, staff and student washrooms, dormitories, teachers’ houses, a dining hall, an ICT building, and waste management facilities.
These facilities are designed to create a safe and enabling learning environment that promotes academic excellence and gender equity in education.
In a parallel move, the government is also investing in vocational education through the ongoing construction of a modern vocational secondary school at Iboya Village in Mbogwe District.
The project, valued at TSh 1.6 billion, is part of a broader strategy to align education with the demands of the labour market.
Once completed, the vocational school will support the implementation of the 2014 Education and Training Policy, revised in 2023, which advocates for the integration of practical skills development into the secondary education curriculum.
The SEQUIP programme, implemented under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology with support from development partners, aims to expand learning opportunities in underserved regions while ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education for all.
The developments in Geita serve as a strong example of how targeted government investment backed by policy and infrastructure can bridge educational gaps, empower girls, and equip youth with the skills needed for the modern economy.
