The Journalists Accreditation Board (JAB) has imposed an indefinite ban on four radio presenters from Mjini FM after establishing multiple violations of media laws and professional ethics during a live broadcast earlier this week.
According to a statement issued on Friday, the board said the decision followed a comprehensive review of a live show dubbed GENGE LA GEN TOK, which aired on July 16, 2025.
The show was hosted by Deodatha William, Mussa Crispin Mgenge, Perfect Crispin, and Iddy Bakari Iddy, and featured local Singeli artist, Dogo PATEN, as a guest.
The board, which was established under Section 11 of the Media Services Act, Chapter 229 (Revised Edition 2023), is responsible for accrediting journalists and ensuring strict adherence to journalistic ethics, professional standards, and national laws.
During its investigation, JAB found that the presenters were not registered nor accredited by the board an offence under Section 19 of the Media Services Act.
It also determined that the presenters had violated the guest’s right to privacy and dignity by coercing him to disclose personal information without his consent, contrary to Regulation 11(1)(e) of the Electronic and Postal Communications (Radio and Television Content) Regulations, 2018.
In addition, the board cited the presenters for using derogatory language toward the guest breaching both the 2018 broadcasting regulations and the 2020 Online Content Regulations, particularly Regulation 16(1) and Schedule Three, paragraph 2(b).
“As a result of these serious violations, the four individuals are hereby barred from engaging in any media or journalism-related activities effective July 18, 2025, until they meet all legal and professional criteria, including academic qualifications and ethical compliance,” the statement reads in part.
The board also issued a strong warning to all individuals working in the media without proper accreditation, emphasizing that journalism is a cornerstone of good governance that must be practiced with integrity, truthfulness, and respect for human dignity.
Media owners were reminded of their obligation to ensure that all personnel involved in content production are fully registered and certified by the board.
