The Board of Trustees of Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) has held its 22nd Special Meeting, where it received and reviewed the Mid-Term Evaluation Report of the hospital’s 2022–2027 Strategic Plan a key step in assessing progress and shaping the way forward for one of Tanzania’s most vital healthcare institutions.
The meeting, held in Dar es Salaam, also marked the official welcoming of Dr. Delilah Kimambo as the new Executive Director of MNH.
She was appointed recently by President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan to lead the national referral and teaching hospital.
Chairing the session, MNH Board Chairperson Dr. Ellen Mkondya-Senkoro warmly welcomed Dr. Kimambo and assured her of the Board’s full support.
“This is a significant leadership role with great responsibility. The Board stands ready to provide you with all the backing you need to steer the hospital forward,” said Dr. Mkondya.
She emphasized that the hospital’s vision to become a centre of excellence in Africa can only be realized through strong leadership, teamwork, and sustained investment in service delivery and human capital.
In her remarks, Dr. Kimambo expressed heartfelt gratitude to President Samia for the trust placed in her and pledged to lead with professionalism, accountability, and a commitment to delivering impactful healthcare outcomes.
“I’m truly honoured by this appointment. Together with the Board, management, and staff, we will work tirelessly to enhance quality service delivery and transform MNH into a leading hub for specialist and super-specialist care in Africa,” said Dr. Kimambo.
The hospital, which serves as the apex of Tanzania’s healthcare system, has been implementing an ambitious five-year strategic plan aimed at expanding services, improving patient care, boosting staff training, and investing in medical technology.
The Mid-Term Review Report presented during the meeting outlined key milestones achieved so far, including the introduction of advanced diagnostic services, increased access to specialised treatments, and capacity-building programs targeting healthcare professionals.
Hospital management, who also attended the meeting, reiterated their commitment to working closely with the new Executive Director and the Board to ensure the plan stays on course.
Speaking after the session, one senior MNH staff member noted: “The hospital is undergoing a major transformation, and with Dr. Kimambo’s leadership, we are confident that we will scale new heights in service delivery.”
MNH plays a pivotal role in the national health system by providing referral services, clinical training for health professionals, and specialist treatments that are often unavailable elsewhere in the country.
As the hospital moves into the second half of its strategic implementation phase, the leadership transition and strong governance signal renewed focus on improving patient outcomes, fostering innovation, and positioning MNH as a medical benchmark for the region.
