Foreign affairs team triumphs in Zanzibar Sports Bonanza

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation has emerged victorious in the Zanzibar Sports Bonanza after its football team, Nje Sports, clinched the championship title in a thrilling finale.

Representing the Minister, Amb. Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, Deputy Minister Cosato Chumi received the trophy on behalf of the Ministry following a hard-fought victory. 

Nje Sports edged out the host team from the Ministry of Finance and Planning – Zanzibar with a 10–9 win on penalties, after a 1–1 draw in regular time.

The tournament, organised by the Office of the President – Finance and Planning, brought together teams from various government institutions, aiming to promote unity and wellness through sport.

Chumi accepted the trophy from the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Amb. Samwel Shelukindo, and the Permanent Secretary for East African Affairs, Amb. Stephen Mbundi, during a brief ceremony held to celebrate the win.

Speaking at the event, Chumi praised the team’s discipline, teamwork and commitment, noting that their performance not only brought pride to the Ministry but also reflected the power of sport in building diplomatic ties and promoting the government’s positive image.

“Sports can play a vital role in enhancing diplomacy and national cohesion,” he said. “This victory is not just about football – it’s about showcasing who we are as a Ministry and what we stand for.”he added

He urged the players to maintain the same spirit as they prepare for the upcoming Government Ministries and Departments Sports Federation Games (SHIMIWI), scheduled to take place in September 2025.

“We want to see this team continue to shine and carry our flag even higher,” he added.
