Excitement is mounting across Tanzania ahead of the opening match of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), as fans, officials, and sports stakeholders rally behind the national team, Taifa Stars.
Tanzania, along with co-hosts Kenya and Uganda, is set to welcome football teams and supporters from across the continent, with the tournament officially kicking off on August 2, 2025.
Taifa Stars will open their campaign against Burkina Faso at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
The atmosphere in the city, especially at public transport hubs such as the Mbezi Magufuli Bus Terminal, has become increasingly electrified with patriotic calls for massive turnout and support for the national side.
Ahmed Ally, the Communications Manager of Simba SC, urged Tanzanians to show their patriotism by filling the stadium and passionately supporting Taifa Stars.
“There is no greater symbol of patriotism than standing behind your national team. When Taifa Stars play, every Tanzanian must show up and stand proud,” he said.
Ally emphasized that this is not just about football, but a national moment where citizens can demonstrate unity and pride.
“It’s not only about winning—it’s about showing the world our spirit, our passion, and our unity as a nation,” he added.
His sentiments were echoed by Christina Mwagala, Public Relations Officer at Tabora United, who encouraged fans to wear national team jerseys and turn the stadium into a sea of Tanzanian colors.
“We need to leave behind our club loyalties this is about Tanzania. Let’s all come together and show our players that they carry the hopes of an entire nation,” she said.
Mwagala expressed confidence in the team, saying that while Burkina Faso is a strong side, Taifa Stars also have what it takes to make a statement especially with the fans' backing.
“This match is not just a game; it’s a statement. And with the right energy from the stands, we can help our team shine,” she added.
Meanwhile, Moses William, Communications Officer for Pamba Jiji FC, revealed that four buses of fans from Mwanza have already been filled, including one specifically reserved for journalists and key officials who will attend the opening match.
“We’re seeing overwhelming enthusiasm in Mwanza. Fans are registering in big numbers, and thanks to the support from our Regional Commissioner, Mr. Said Mtanda, transportation has been made available,” William noted.
He added that the Mwanza delegation is scheduled to leave for Dar es Salaam on August 1 and called upon stakeholders to contribute to the journey by donating water, T-shirts, and other essentials.
“This is a national cause, and we invite everyone companies, well-wishers, and fans to play a part. Let’s make sure the Mwanza contingent is well-prepared to represent the region proudly in Dar,” he said.
As the countdown to kick-off continues, the message from every corner of the country is clear: unity, passion, and patriotism will define Tanzania’s journey in CHAN 2024.
The call has gone out for fans to pack the stadium and ensure that the opening game becomes a memorable moment in Tanzanian football history.
