The Tanzania Squash Federation (TSF) has reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing young talent after successfully hosting a national youth tournament that brought together players from across the country.
Held over the weekend at the Gymkhana Club in Dar es Salaam, the tournament featured young squash enthusiasts competing in the under-17 and under-12 categories, highlighting both emerging talent and growing national interest in the sport.
TSF Secretary General, Mr. Marwa Busigara, expressed his satisfaction with the level of performance exhibited by the young players, describing it as a promising sign for the future of squash in Tanzania.
“I am impressed by the skill and determination shown by these young athletes. It is encouraging to see such competitiveness at this stage. We urge them to keep working hard and remain committed to the game,” Mr. Busigara said.
His sentiments were echoed by Mr. Agaeli Lucas, a squash coach from Arusha, who was pleased with the high turnout and energy displayed during the event.
He noted that many of the players were first-time participants, which reflects the increasing interest in squash among young people.
“We are witnessing a new generation of players with great potential. The passion and dedication they have shown are signs that the sport is growing,” said Mr. Lucas.
Top performers in the tournament, including Akram Mustapha and Sophia Amos, called on the government to integrate squash into school sports programs. They believe doing so would help promote the sport and attract more young people to participate.
“There is a need to introduce squash in both primary and secondary schools. It’s a sport with great benefits, and expanding access will inspire more youth to join,” said Sophia.
The tournament served not only as a platform for competition but also as a celebration of youth development through sport, reinforcing squash’s role in shaping the next generation of athletes in Tanzania.
