Simiyu,Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has called on parents to support their daughters’ education by enrolling them in newly established public schools dedicated to girls, part of a broader government initiative to improve access to science and technology education across the country.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Simiyu Regional Girls’ Secondary School in northwestern Tanzania, President Samia highlighted her administration’s strategic investment in building all-girls science-focused secondary schools in every region.
The initiative is designed to close gender gaps in science and technology disciplines, where female participation has historically lagged.
“These schools are a deliberate intervention to empower our girls with access to quality science education and unlock opportunities for higher learning,” President Samia said.
The new institutions are part of a wider government-led infrastructure program aimed at enhancing the country’s education sector.
Beyond classrooms and laboratories, the schools include boarding facilities, teacher housing, sports grounds, and eco-friendly kitchens that reduce reliance on firewood aligning with Tanzania’s green development goals.
In tandem with the girls’ schools, the government is also developing specialized boys’ schools and expanding vocational education opportunities through the Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA), ensuring pathways for youth who may not proceed to tertiary education.
The President’s remarks come amid a broader regional development agenda, with over TZS 90 billion ($34 million) allocated for the construction of 26 new regional administrative offices nationwide.
Earlier in the day, President Samia inaugurated the new offices for the Simiyu Regional Commissioner and the Bariadi Town Council, both part of this investment drive.
Minister of State for Regional Administration and Local Government, Mohamed Mchengerwa, commended the President for her leadership and for prioritizing investment in public service delivery, governance, education, and infrastructure.
President Samia’s tour of Simiyu is part of a working visit to launch flagship development projects under her administration, underscoring her government’s commitment to inclusive growth, gender equity, and modernization of public services.
