Members of Parliament have commended the Tanzania Cities Transforming Infrastructure and Competitiveness (TACTIC) project for delivering major economic and social reforms in their constituencies, noting improved infrastructure, enhanced public service delivery, and a more vibrant business environment.
The lawmakers made the remarks on June 25, 2025, at the Government City conference hall in Mtumba, Dodoma, during the official contract signing ceremony for the implementation of the project in 11 towns across mainland Tanzania.
The towns include Morogoro and Songea under Phase I, and Tanga, Korogwe, Babati, Shinyanga, Bukoba, Bariadi, Lindi, Iringa and Njombe under Phase II.
Beneficiary MPs said TACTIC has played a pivotal role in transforming urban planning and development, while strengthening the capacity of local authorities to deliver quality services and attract private sector participation.
Tanga Urban MP and Minister for Health, Ummy Mwalimu, cited the construction of drainage systems, street lighting and paved roads as game-changers for her constituency.
She noted that the long-anticipated completion of the Makorora Market and Deep Sea Fish Market in Tanga previously a distant dream is now a reality.
“These modern markets will not only elevate the image of our city but also increase income generation for entrepreneurs and traders, thanks to the improved and attractive business environment,” she said.
In Iringa, the second phase of TACTIC has brought renewed hope to local traders. Iringa Urban MP, Jesca Msambatavangu, said the construction of Kihesa Market will resolve long-standing challenges faced by informal vendors who were frequently evicted from unauthorized trading zones in the city center.
“This project will improve livelihoods by creating a formal, secure space for small businesses and will boost the flow of money within the local economy,” she said.
Msambatavangu further highlighted the construction of key roads such as Mkimbizi–Bima, Mtwivila, Viziwi and Bontank, saying they would stimulate Iringa’s economic and tourism potential.
“These roads will not only beautify the city but also strengthen its position as a key tourism destination in the southern highlands,” she added.
In similar sentiments, Bukoba Urban MP Steven Byabato and Shinyanga Urban MP Patrobas Katambi thanked the government for rolling out TACTIC projects in their towns.
They paid tribute to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her leadership in spearheading economic transformation and inclusive development through strategic investments in urban infrastructure.
“TACTIC is more than just roads and markets it is about modernizing our towns, empowering communities, and laying the foundation for sustainable economic growth,” said Katambi.
The TACTIC programme is a national initiative designed to improve urban infrastructure in 45 towns across Tanzania while building the institutional capacity of local government authorities.
It aims to enhance competitiveness, promote inclusive urbanization, and improve access to public services in rapidly growing urban areas.
