Nineteen football referees in Tanzania have successfully completed the third phase of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) training course, which concluded recently at the Azam Complex in Chamazi, Dar es Salaam.

The course, held from June 9 to June 13, aimed to equip local referees with the necessary knowledge and technical skills to effectively implement VAR technology in domestic matches.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, the Second Vice President of the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), Steven Mnguto, praised the referees for their professionalism and dedication throughout the training.

“I commend all the referees who took part in this program. Your commitment and professionalism are commendable. When VAR is fully implemented, we are confident it will be handled by individuals who are truly knowledgeable—not just those who think they are,” said Mnguto.

He also extended his appreciation to CAF and especially FIFA for their support in making the training possible.

“We are grateful for the support from FIFA and CAF. This initiative is a significant step forward for Tanzanian football. With the skills and expertise gained from various experienced instructors, we believe our referees are now better prepared to contribute to the growth of the sport in the country,” he added.

The VAR training marks a critical milestone as Tanzania continues to modernize its football officiating in line with international standards.
