By John Mapepele

The Minister of State in the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG),  Mohamed Mchengerwa, has officially inaugurated the state-of-the-art Kumbilamoto Nyama Choma Market in Vingunguti, Ilala District, Dar es Salaam. The inauguration ceremony also featured the signing of six development project contracts valued at TZS 7.7 billion.

The new market, constructed at a cost of approximately TZS 727 million, was praised by  Mchengerwa as a successful initiative by the Dar es Salaam City Council. He called on other councils across the country to follow this exemplary model of local development.

“This market is not only a source of economic empowerment but also a catalyst for job creation for many Tanzanians,” said the Minister.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining the facility to ensure its sustainability and long-term service to the community.

Hon. Mchengerwa noted that the completion of this market is part of the implementation of the ruling party, CCM’s, manifesto.

He highlighted that the Sixth Phase Government, under President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has already delivered on many of its commitments by completing numerous development projects across the country.

The Minister also urged all local government authorities to meet their revenue collection targets, enabling them to implement more impactful development projects.

He encouraged innovation in planning and execution to ensure maximum benefit for citizens and the nation.

Speaking on the role of local contractors, Mchengerwa emphasized the need to prioritize Tanzanian contractors in public projects.

He also stressed accountability, urging authorities to take firm action against contractors who underperform or fail to deliver quality work.

Ilala District Commissioner, Edward Mpogole, assured the Minister that all signed contracts will be completed before the end of the year, and that the public will soon begin to enjoy the benefits of the newly launched projects.

Also in attendance was the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly and Member of Parliament for Ilala, Mussa Zungu.

He urged Tanzanians to maintain peace and unity as the country approaches the general elections scheduled for October this year.

Amina Selemani, one of the vendors at the new market, expressed heartfelt gratitude to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for financing the project. She noted that the market has brought life-changing employment opportunities, especially for women.

“We are truly grateful to our President for this generous initiative. This market has been a turning point in our lives and a symbol of hope for many of us,” Amina said.
