The Deputy Minister of Finance, Hamad Hassan Chande (MP), has issued instructions to the Commissioner General of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) to intensify patrols along the borders, especially in areas prone to smuggling activities in Momba District, Songwe Region.
This effort will be carried out in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, according to Mr. Chande.
Chande made these remarks in Parliament, Dodoma, while responding to a supplementary question from the Member of Parliament for Momba, Condester Michael Sichalwe, who inquired about the government’s emergency plan to curb the illicit movement of goods out of the country.
Additionally, in response to the MP’s main question regarding the timeline for the construction of a Customs Centre in Momba to alleviate traffic congestion at the Tunduma border in Songwe Region, Chande stated that the government is currently conducting a detailed feasibility study.
This study aims to gather critical information necessary for the establishment of the Customs Centre in Momba District.
He added that the feasibility study is being carried out during the 2025/26 fiscal year by the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) in cooperation with various government departments responsible for border customs operations.
