TANESCO: technical glitch halts mobile banking access to LUKU tokens

By Alfred Zacharia

Dodoma – May 6, 2025 – The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has announced a disruption affecting the purchase of electricity tokens through its LUKU prepaid system, citing technical difficulties on certain mobile banking platforms.

In a public notice issued today by TANESCO’s Directorate of Customer Service and Communications, the utility firm confirmed that, starting Tuesday, May 6, 2025, some customers have been unable to purchase LUKU tokens using mobile banking services offered by unspecified mobile networks.

The issue has interrupted a key payment channel widely used by Tanzanians to top up electricity credit from their mobile phones.

According to the company, its technical team is working around the clock to resolve the issue, though the disruption is expected to continue until mid-June. Customers have been urged to seek alternative options to access LUKU tokens during this period.

“While we regret the inconvenience, we encourage customers to make purchases through authorized LUKU agents or explore other available channels that are not affected by this disruption,” TANESCO said in the statement.

The utility company emphasized its commitment to keeping the public informed as restoration efforts progress and extended its apologies to all affected customers for the inconvenience caused.

This latest development comes amid increasing reliance on digital platforms for utility services, with mobile banking being one of the most convenient and popular channels for purchasing prepaid electricity across the country.
