All 33 members of the Executive Committee of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the African Region have unanimously confirmed Professor Mohamed Yakub Janabi as the new Regional Director for a five-year term, effective immediately.

The confirmation took place today, May 28, 2025, in Geneva, Switzerland, during the 157th session of the Executive Committee.

With this appointment, Prof. Janabi officially assumes the role, becoming the second Tanzanian to hold this prestigious position. He follows the late Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, who tragically passed away before taking office.

Prof. Janabi’s overwhelming endorsement is a testament to Tanzania’s growing influence on the global stage, driven by strong diplomacy under the leadership of  President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, and the country’s ability to produce highly qualified professionals capable of leading international organizations.

His confirmation follows a decisive victory in the election held on May 18, 2025, where he secured 32 out of 47 votes in the first round an extraordinary achievement that made him the only candidate in the election's history to win outright in the initial round.

Prof. Janabi's leadership is expected to bring renewed energy and strategic direction to WHO’s efforts across the African continent.
