Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has directed the Mwanza Regional Authorities to expedite and complete the investigation into the alleged theft of equipment at Sengerema District Hospital, emphasizing that any staff member found culpable must face legal action without exception.
“Public servants are entrusted with the duty to serve citizens with integrity and dedication. The Government will not tolerate any individual who is proven to be involved in theft. It is critically important to safeguard public property. Here, we provided three motorcycles they have been stolen. Construction materials, medical supplies, and even ambulance tires have gone missing. How can the ambulance function without tires?” he questioned.
The Prime Minister issued the directive on Monday, May 19, 2025, while addressing residents following an inspection and foundation stone laying ceremony for the ongoing construction of Sengerema District Hospital, as part of his official tour of Mwanza Region. He called on all public servants to uphold their responsibilities and serve citizens diligently.
He highlighted the Government’s continued investment in expanding access to essential services, particularly healthcare, closer to where people live, in order to reduce both the cost and burden of travel for medical services.
He stressed that safeguarding these public resources is a shared responsibility, and any employee found involved in theft must be held fully accountable under the law.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Darison Andrew, the District Medical Officer for Sengerema, said the hospital construction project commenced in 2020 and is being implemented in phases. The facility began offering services on August 16, 2023, even as construction continues.
Dr. Andrew noted that the project, once complete, is expected to cost over TSh 3.1 billion. In addition to construction funding, the Government allocated TSh 1.1 billion for the procurement of medical equipment.
“Our hospital has also received additional medical supplies from the Government worth TSh 418 million, which are currently in use for service delivery,” he said.
He extended his gratitude to the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, under the leadership of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, for its unwavering commitment to improving the health sector particularly in expanding infrastructure, ensuring the availability of modern medical equipment, essential medicines, and skilled healthcare personnel.
Looking ahead, the hospital’s next construction phases will include a private ward, a perimeter fence, pedestrian walkways, a maternal and child health unit (RCH), a vaccination center (IVD), and ten staff housing units.
