On May 4, 2025, more than 3,500 runners took over the vibrant streets of Tanzania’s commercial capital on Sunday in the Absa Dar City Marathon 2025, marking a historic moment in the city’s growing culture of health, fitness, and community spirit.
The marathon, organized by The Runners Club and sponsored by Absa Bank Tanzania, saw a significant jump from last year’s 2,500 participants, reflecting rising enthusiasm among both amateur and elite runners.
The event offered three categories 5km, 10km, and a 21km half marathon, attracting local and international runners and positioning itself as one of the most ambitious city center races in East Africa.
"This is more than just a race. It’s a celebration of life, wellness, and unity,” said Mr. Aron Luhanga, Head of Marketing and Corporate Affairs at Absa Bank Tanzania. “At Absa, we believe that Your story matters, and through this marathon, we are proud to walk with Tanzanians as they build healthy, inspiring lives."
Absa Bank emphasized that the event aligns with its mission to promote healthier lifestyles and foster meaningful social interaction.
Beyond fitness, the marathon is a growing platform for community investment. A portion of this year’s registration proceeds will go towards supporting the maternity ward at Mnazi Mmoja Hospital, and a post-marathon blood donation drive is set to bolster Tanzania’s national blood bank.
As spectators lined the streets to cheer on participants, the event became a citywide celebration, uniting people from all walks of life.
It also helped amplify President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s ongoing efforts to promote Tanzania as a premier tourism destination.
Organizers hinted at even broader international participation in future editions, aiming to make Dar es Salaam a recognized name on the global marathon circuit.
Top finishers were honored with trophies, cash prizes, and Absa-branded merchandise, recognizing their athletic excellence and dedication.
But for many, the real reward was the joy of participation and the shared spirit of progress.
With its growing impact and inclusive approach, the Absa Dar City Marathon is not just a race—it’s a movement toward a healthier, more connected Tanzania.
