In light of the increasing fire incidents reported across the country, NMB Bank has taken proactive measures by organizing a fire disaster preparedness drill at its Mwanjelwa Branch in Mbeya. The exercise aimed to strengthen readiness and emergency response among staff and stakeholders.
Speaking during the drill on May 26, 2025, NMB Mwanjelwa Branch Manager, Mr. Lembrus Israel, emphasized the importance of preparedness, noting that fire emergencies can occur anywhere and at any time.
“Today, we conducted a simulation of a fire outbreak a disaster that can happen in homes, institutions, businesses, or even farms. Fires are unpredictable and often unpreventable. That’s why preparedness is key. During this drill, we coordinated with the Fire and Rescue Force, the police, Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital, and TANESCO to ensure a safe and swift response, including cutting off power to the affected building,” Mr. Israel said.
He expressed appreciation for the prompt response from all involved agencies and confirmed that the situation was brought under control with 99% success.
Mr. Israel also highlighted that NMB Bank provides insurance services that cover fire, death, and property loss, and he encouraged all customers to consider insuring their assets to ensure compensation in the event of disasters.
“NMB offers a range of insurance products that protect individuals and businesses from losses caused by fire and other unexpected events. We urge our customers, especially here in the Mbeya region, to take advantage of these services for their own safety and peace of mind,” he added.
He reassured the public that no actual harm occurred during the drill, and simulated casualties were safely transported to the hospital's emergency unit as part of the exercise. The bank also confirmed that customer funds remain completely secure.
“I want to clarify that this was a drill designed to test and improve our emergency preparedness. There was no real fire, and all customer funds and records are completely safe. We thank everyone for their cooperation,” said Mr. Israel.
Mbeya District Police Commander (OCD), Mr. Magnus Milinga, also addressed the event, urging the public to remain calm and report emergencies immediately. He reiterated that the drill was coordinated with all relevant security and safety agencies to ensure effectiveness.
Also present was Mr. Gervas Fungamali, Operations Officer of the Mbeya Regional Fire and Rescue Force, who praised the drill for its realism. He noted that two staff members were “rescued” and transported as part of the simulation.
“I want to remind the public that in the event of a fire whether at a bank, market, or home please call the emergency number 114 immediately. It’s a toll-free number. Many people delay calling emergency services while trying to put out the fire themselves. Drills like this one are essential, as they help both institutions and first responders to test and improve their response capabilities,” Mr. Fungamali said.
