How Kahama Fresh factory transforms livelihoods in Karagwe

Karagwe- The Kahama Fresh milk processing and packaging factory in Karagwe District, Kagera Region, has created over 100 direct jobs for young people from across the region and beyond since it began operations in 2015.

The factory’s Director, Jossam Ntangeki, shared this during a training visit by students, teachers, and board members from the Perfect Education and Training Institute (PETI).

He also fulfilled a promise made during PETI’s 27th graduation ceremony by constructing three classrooms for the institute.

Ntangeki said that many young people from Kagera, especially Karagwe, are now working in technical, management, and administrative positions at the factory.

He added that through collaboration with the government’s Building a Better Tomorrow (BBT) program, the factory supports youth with dairy cows, training, and advice to help them engage in modern livestock farming and entrepreneurship.

He described the factory as a source of hope for farmers, livestock keepers, and youth in the region by helping them move out of poverty.

PETI Director, Mbeki Mbeki, praised the factory’s large investment, saying it has laid the groundwork for improving farmers’ economic well-being.

He said the project has been a game-changer for dairy farmers, especially during times when milk production is high but markets are limited.

Through a direct milk purchasing system, the factory has raised household incomes and motivated farmers to invest in quality dairy cattle.

Mbeki also noted that the factory has led to improved local infrastructure and services, including better roads, electricity, and clean water in the Kihanga area.

He explained that Kahama Fresh supports national development goals by promoting industrial growth and advancing rural agriculture and livestock sectors. The factory shows that Tanzania can grow its economy in a way that includes and benefits local communities.

"As a resident of Karagwe District, I can say this factory is a strategic project that is improving the lives of thousands. It has become a driver of positive economic, social, and cultural change in Karagwe and across Tanzania," Mbeki said.
