The Board of Directors of the Electrical Transmission and Distribution, Construction and Maintenance Company Limited (ETDCO) has expressed satisfaction with the progress and management of the ongoing 132kV electricity transmission project stretching from Tabora to Katavi.
Speaking during an official inspection visit in Tabora Region, the Board Chairman, Mr. Raymond Mbilinyi, commended the implementation team for their diligence and efficiency in delivering the project.
“We are impressed with the professionalism and commitment demonstrated in the execution of this project. Reaching 96% completion is no small feat,” said Mr. Mbilinyi.
“We are confident that by the end of June this year, electricity from the national grid will have reached Mpanda District in Katavi Region, significantly transforming the region’s energy access.”he added
Mr. Mbilinyi emphasized that the transmission line is not only a technical achievement but a key enabler for regional development and industrial growth.
“This project will open up economic opportunities across the value chain—from agriculture to manufacturing and services,” he added.
ETDCO’s Acting General Manager, CPA Sadock Mugendi, briefed the board on the status of the project and assured them that work is in its final stages.
“Currently, we are conducting the final inspections of the transmission line, and all indicators show that we are on track to complete 100% of the project by June 2025,” he said.
“Our teams have worked tirelessly to ensure we meet all technical and safety standards.”he added
Also speaking during the visit, TANESCO’s Western Zone Director, Engineer Richard Swai, highlighted the strategic importance of the project in strengthening the power infrastructure in Western Tanzania.
“This project will significantly improve electricity reliability and availability in Tabora and Katavi,” said Eng. Swai.
“We urge local residents to prepare for the arrival of grid power, which will spur growth across sectors such as agriculture, agro-processing, and small-scale industries.”he added
“Electricity from the national grid will not only power homes but also fuel the dreams of entrepreneurs, farmers, and manufacturers in these regions,” he added.
The 132kV transmission line from Tabora to Katavi is part of the government’s broader efforts to expand the national grid and ensure equitable access to energy across Tanzania.
Once completed, it is expected to catalyze socio-economic development and improve the quality of life for thousands of residents in the Western Corridor.
