The Zanzibar Office of the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), under the leadership of Manager Ms. Esuvatie Aisa Masinga, has conducted a specialized seminar on Safe Internet Practices for 36 Shehas from the Wete District in North Pemba.
The training forms part of the Authority’s ongoing nationwide digital safety campaigns, "NI RAHISI SANA" and "SITAPELIKI," which aim to empower citizens with practical knowledge to stay safe online.
“We believe that community leaders like Shehas are critical in spreading awareness about online safety at the grassroots level. Their influence can help reduce the risk of cyber scams in rural and urban communities alike,” said Ms. Masinga during her opening remarks.
The seminar provided a rare opportunity for the Shehas to share real-life experiences involving online fraud attempts and receive expert guidance on how to recognize, report, and prevent cyber threats.
“I was once contacted by someone pretending to be a government official asking for my personal details. Thanks to this seminar, I now understand how to verify such contacts and avoid falling victim,” said one participating Sheha.
Participants were trained on several key safety tips, including creating strong and secure passwords, avoiding unsolicited requests for money transfers or personal data, being cautious with unfamiliar links, and verifying their registered SIM numbers via the USSD code *106#.
TCRA also emphasized the importance of utilizing official communication and reporting channels. Citizens were reminded to contact their service providers using the number 100 and to report any suspicious or fraudulent activity via 15040.
“Cybersecurity is not just a technical issue; it’s a public education issue. With knowledge and vigilance, we can protect ourselves and our communities,” added Ms. Masinga.
The session concluded with a call to action, encouraging Shehas to take this knowledge back to their communities and continue raising awareness on online safety at the local level.
